Buying your Mobility Scooter

So you're looking to buy a scooter, but not really sure of where to start?

Get an idea of the type of scooter you need

The scooter you choose will need to match your lifestyle and requirements. Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Do you want to use your scooter all day, every day?
  2. Do you want to use your scooter only indoors, mainly outdoors or only outdoors (remember, you may need to take it into a store or inside a friends house)?
  3. Do you need to go over grass, gravel, up and down hills or uneven surfaces?
  4. Do you need to take your scooter inside a car? If so, how often? What size car and who is going to lift it in?
  5. Where will your scooter be kept and where will it be charged when not in use?
  6. How far will you go in a single journey or during each day (remember that battery age, weight of user, type of road, hills and cold weather may all adversely effect the maximum range of a battery)?
  7. Would it be an advantage if you could travel up to 8mph (13kph) on the road as well as up to 4mph (6kph) on the pavement?
  8. How much can you afford to pay, keeping in mind replacement batteries and other maintenance costs?

If you've not already done so, use our how to choose guide to narrow down your search and give you an idea of the type of scooter you may need. Alternatively, take a look at our complete range of scooters.

Organise a visit to your nearest Sterling Scooter dealership

You can find your nearest dealership by using our online store locator. It's important not to rush into buying a scooter until you've sought advice from an experienced supplier. Mobility scooters are legally classed as a medical device - and as such, should be offered with professional advice and support, to ensure the correct product is matched to your needs. An incorrectly matched product will be a waste of your money and time.

Ask for a scooter demonstration

Your Sterling dealership will be more than happy to provide you with a free demonstration of any Sterling scooter, with no obligation to buy. They'll provide you with all the information you need to feel at ease behind the tiller. You can even take one for a quick spin!

Finding it difficult to visit your dealership? That's not a problem - they'll be more than happy to come to you. Simply let them know a date and time that's best for you, plus the product you're interested in and they'll show you a demonstration from the comfort of your own home.

It's always advisable to have a friend or relative with you when you try your scooter. If you are going to use your scooter indoors, check that it is easy to control in a restricted space. If you are going to use the vehicle outside, plan a route which will include the type of terrain that you'd regularly encounter on your journeys. Also, if the scooter is to be taken in your car, ask your dealer to show you how this is done.

Covering yourself for the future

Before purchasing your Scooter, it's important to take into account the long term needs of ownership. Like any vehicle, over time with use, there may be gradual wear and tear on your Scooter and it's important that you take this into account. For example, have you taken into consideration potential battery replacement in the future?

Sterling dealerships also offer a range of comprehensive after-sales care, including breakdown cover, extended warranties, regular service plans and repairs. If something was to go wrong, you'll want to ensure that you're covered - just incase. Remember to ask your dealer for more information.

Buying your Scooter

If you'd prefer to spread the cost of you payment out, many dealerships offer a range of finance plans to help cover the repayments in easy sums across time. Always remember to read all terms and conditions first, so you know exactly what you're going to pay, when and for how long.

Delivery & Inspection of your scooter

When bought by a Sterling dealer, you'll receive a full pre-delivery inspection and a comprehensive product handover upon delivery of your scooter, ensuring that you're completely happy and confident in your purchase. Before they go, ensure that you're completely happy with how to operate the scooter (dismantling, re-assembling, charging, etc...).

Registering your Scooter

Finally, after going through the documentation that accompanied your scooter, you will find a warranty registration card. Please remember to complete and send the card back to us to register your warranty.

Please be aware that you might not receive all of these benefits if you're not buying from a Sterling dealership.
